Burger King introduced its Original Chicken Sandwich close to 50 years ago, differentiated by its signature oblong shape. On July 7, the Miami-based quick-service chain is launching two boldly flavored variations.
The Loaded Jalapeño Original Chicken Sandwich amps up the heat, layering the long white-meat chicken patty with creamy jalapeño sauce, fried and pickled jalapeños, fried onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and American cheese on an oblong sesame seed bun. The Club Original Chicken Sandwich starts with the same chicken patty and bun, but changes up the build with the addition of bacon, melted Swiss cheese, and tomatoes along with the traditional lettuce and mayonnaise.
“The Original Chicken Sandwich is a true Burger King icon that’s been loved for its signature seasoning, taste, and unmistakable shape since 1979,” said Joel Yashinsky, chief marketing officer of Burger King US&C, in a statement. “Through our ongoing guest listening initiative, we heard just how passionate fans are about this sandwich and how excited they are for new twists on it. The Loaded Jalapeño and Club flavors are our way of celebrating that love while adding something new to the lineup.”
The listening initiative Yashinsky is referring to is the brainchild of Burger King president Tom Curtis, who gave out his personal phone number and invited consumers to call with suggestions and comments — both positive and negative — on the chain’s operations, menu, and more. Burger King is using the insights to steer product innovation and improvements.
Chicken sandwiches have been a platform for innovation before, most notably during the so-called “chicken sandwich wars” a few years back. Burger King entered the fray a little late, introducing its Ch’king sandwich in June, 2021, and didn’t see the jump in sales experienced by its competitors. Plus, the fresh chicken fillet was hand-breaded at each BK location, which required additional training, new equipment, and longer execution time, slowing operations.
The Ch’king was discontinued in 2022, replaced by the Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwich. This one features a pre-breaded, frozen chicken patty and a savory sauce on a toasted potato bun. It comes in regular, spicy, and bacon-and-Swiss variations. These are available on the core menu.
The limited-time Loaded Jalapeño Original Chicken and Club Original Chicken Sandwich roll out Tuesday at participating Burger King locations. Prices vary, but range from $6.59-$7.19.
