Chipotle Mexican Grill is hosting a $1 million burrito giveaway during the FIFA Men’s World Cup final July 19, inspired by the tournament’s new hydration breaks, as well as the long-running social media conversation about guests who “accidentally” fill their water cups with lemonade at its restaurants.

During the second official hydration break in the final — featuring Argentina against Spain — Chipotle will share a video from its Instagram account challenging viewers to follow a lemonade-filled cup as three identical Chipotle water cups shuffle across the screen. At the end of the video, the lemonade-filled cup will reveal a text-to-win code. The first 100,000 participants to text that code to 888-222 will receive a free entrée offer. The codes will be valid for any regularly priced entrée until July 24.

The World Cup hydration breaks have become a focal point of social media fodder, with some fans criticizing the pauses for compromising the game’s traditional two-half format, while others have found humor in how different teams hydrate. Chipotle has also leaned into social media jokes about customers filling their water cups with lemonade with self-aware posts on Instagram, TikTok, and X.

"The best brand ideas start with a fan truth," Senior Vice President of Marketing Stephanie Perdue said in a statement. "Our water cup has become one of the most recognizable symbols in Chipotle fan culture, and when hydration breaks emerged as a new part of the matchday experience, we saw an opportunity to bring that fan lore to life on one of the biggest stages in sports."

The Chipotle “Water” Break promotion comes on the heels of the chain’s Matchday BOGO offering guests a free entrée if they wore a soccer jersey in store on June 11, when the tournament kicked off.

New data from Placer.ai shows that Chipotle’s World Cup jersey buy-one-get-one promotion drove a nearly 60% increase in traffic compared to the chain’s year-to-date daily average and marked the chain’s busiest day of 2026 so far.
