Moe’s launches a build-your-own meal kit

The offering feeds six-to-eight people for $49.99.

Moe’s Southwest Grill is hoping to provide a solution for group occasions that is bigger than takeout and smaller than catering. The fast-casual chain's new Meal Kit XL feeds six-to-eight people and is available for $49.99. 

The build-your-own kit includes two proteins, rice, beans, cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, Moe’s signature queso, and chips and salsa. It is available for pickup or delivery. 

The Meal Kit XL fits a broader trend toward flexibility and customization as more chains create similar mix-and-match options to provide a strong value proposition. During a recent Technomic webinar on strategic pricing insights, Senior Principal and Vice President of Innovation or Research and Insights Rich Shank said the industry needs to find “the next big thing” in a value program this year because getting attention with tiered pricing is going to be difficult as more chains jump in. Perhaps that’s also why we’re seeing more mix-and-match opportunities. Pret A Manger, Panera, Buffalo Wild Wings, Little Caesars, Habit Burger & Grill, and Sweetgreen have all recently added similar offerings, for instance. Moe’s competitor Chipotle launched a value-focused, digital-exclusive family meal deal called “Build-Your-Own Chipotle” in August, which can feed four to six people

Applebee’s has found traction with its 2 for $25 menu, which includes the choice of one appetizer and two entrées. Chili’s successful 3 For Me deal, starting at $10.99, includes a beverage, appetizer, and entrée. Red Robin recently introduced its Big Yummm Deals, with select menu items, bottomless fries, and a beverage starting at $9.99. The quick-service segment has also jumped onto the trend. KFC’s new $20 Build a Bucket deal, for example, includes eight pieces of chicken (the choice of bone-in or tenders), four sides, and four biscuits.
